Husky Facts

Alot of energy goes into homing Snowkeli puppies. I interview potential owners thoroughly. There is a reason for this - the puppies after 8 weeks of being a part of your life become like family, I feel it is my responsibility to find the BEST possible home.

Siberians are not for everyone, they are not one size fits all, what works in one household may not work in another.

The first and foremost consideration is that huskies, like ALL DOGS are pack animals! What does this mean? You need to consider how a wild dog lives, take wolves for example, remembering we are taking a wild dog and domesticating it.

Wolves live in packs with other wolves, they hunt, dig, chew, eat live animals, play with one another and breed!

You'll realise that we expect alot out of our dogs in a backyard, by themselves with no one to play with or hunt and if they are not desexed they will want to breed.

You also have to consider their desire to RUN, EXERCISE, BURN UP ENERGY- call it what you will. All of these issues can be overcome!

  1. -EXERCISE your dog, walk or run preferably...EVERYDAY.
  2. -give them an area to dig in e.g.. a SANDPIT
  3. -don't have small fury animals around or keep them very separate
  4. -get two dogs, company
  5. -make your dog a KONGAHOLIC (refer Ian Dunbar)
  6. -DESEX your dog!!!
One book I highly recommend (all my puppy owners get before they pick up their pups) is 'BEFORE YOU GET YOUR PUPPY'-by Dr Ian Dunbar. Another MUST READ BOOK FOR ALL NEW PUPPY OWNERS (huskies or not) is 'AFTER YOU GET YOUR PUPPY'- by Dr Ian Dunbar.

I also strongly recommend all puppies (Huskies or otherwise) attend PUPPY PRE-SCHOOL CLASSES. 1 hour, once a week for 4-5 weeks is not much of your time for a lifetime of invaluable training and socialisation tips. Enquire at your local vet or training centre.

If at the end of the day you think you can handle and look after a dog having read these considerations, and DO consider them as there will be mishaps: like your garden might be destroyed, your lawn may be ruined, your favourite pair of shoes may be destroyed. On top of these issues now comes the Siberian Husky challenges:

  1. -their ability to make houdini look like an amateur. Your fences need to be extremely secure!!
  2. -they have a double coat which they drop twice a year, and a lot of coat is dropped-like shopping bags full. If you don't like animal hair to bad get used to it with a husky.
  3. -they are not guard dogs- they are usually weary of strangers but normally don't bark.
  4. -they like to dig!! need I say more
  5. -they do tend to howl occasionally.
  6. -huskies are very intelligent and get bored very easy, one thing I say to all potential owners is to get on your hands and knees in the backyard and look at what your dog will see all day-24 hours a day!!. This gets very boring especially for a very active dog. They need a lot of stimulation!

If you have any questions on these issues please feel free to email me.

From here if you still want a husky do your research on a reputable registered breeder, just remember anyone can become a registered breeder!! Some issues to be aware of when looking at puppies: avoid pups that are,
  1. -shy
  2. -unsociable
  3. -dull coats
  4. -pot bellied
  5. -living in dirty conditions
  6. -under 8 weeks of age
  7. -puppies that don't look like they have had much human contact
Please read BEFORE YOU GET YOUR PUPPY this will help in deciding on a breeder.

GOOD LUCK!
